in consideration of herself (work in progress) will be performed at the Skyline Artists in Residence: September Showing.
In consideration of herself is currently a movement exploration focusing on the female experience of feeling unsafe. These vignettes depict being unsafe: in your own body, in a relationship, in your environment, with the people around you, with society’s portrayal of you, telling you who you ought to be. Drawing inspiration from the works of Meret Oppenheim, the work evolves from the understanding of woman as object, as less than, and as commodity.
For women, the implications are that they have to live their own female life as well as the female life that men project on them. Thus, they are woman times two. That’s too much.

Please join us for our third Artist Showcase, this time celebrating the artists in residence during the month of September: Triptych Collective (dance), Kelly Keith (painting) and Ghost Trees Big Band (music).
The evening will include separate and collaborative pieces by Ghost Trees Big Band and Triptych Collective, along trumpet work by Jacob Wick, who is visiting from Mexico City. We'll share a performance schedule soon.
This short-term artist residency project provides studio space, a stipend, and a showcase for three outstanding Charlotte artists or groups of artists each month, including installation art, sculpture, painting, theater, dance, and music. This project will transform the Goodyear building, the future home of Tryon Place. Resident artists are creating and showing their own work - and altering the building itself.
The project is co-presented by The Wall Poems of Charlotte and Amy Herman. Huge thanks to Crescent Communities for the space and support, along with Moore & Van Allen PLLC; Parkway Properties; Little Diversified Architects; The Wilbert Group; Troutman Sanders; and Charlotte Center City Partners.
We recently got an extension thanks to Crescent Communities and Troutman Sanders, and we'll be doing a month of residencies in October and more programming tbd in November. Hooray and thank you, everyone!
